- README.TXT for Norton Utilities for Windows 95
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Thank you for purchasing Norton Utilities for Windows 95. This
- version of Norton Utilities is designed to run only under Windows 95.
- This version is not compatible with Windows NT, Windows 3.x, Windows
- for OS/2, or Windows emulators such as SoftWindows.
-
- Please review this document in its entirety prior to installing
- Norton Utilities as it contains late-breaking information that the
- User's Guide and the online help do not contain.
-
- General information about Norton Utilities can be found online using
- Info Desk. Click Info Desk from the Norton Utilities menu.

-
- 1.0 Installation with Setup Wizard and Uninstall
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- NOTE: DO NOT install Norton Utilities to a folder with a name longer
- than 40 characters. The DOS-based Norton Utilities programs will not run
- properly.
- =========================
- During installation, Setup Wizard attempts to rename older Norton
- Utilities programs to *.OLD, or, if files with this extension already
- exist, to *.BAK. If both extensions already exist, Setup Wizard over-
- writes the older file without creating a backup first.
- =========================
- During installation, Setup Wizard creates backups of USER.DAT and
- SYSTEM.DAT. After making a rescue disk that includes the registry files,
- the backups USER.NU and SYSTEM.NU can safely be deleted.
- =========================
- Microsoft Office 95's FindFast feature may cause problems with Setup
- Wizard. Installing Norton Utilities while FindFast is running causes
- Setup Wizard dialog-box placement problems (dialog boxes may also appear
- off the screen) and conflict with its initial Windows 95 restart
- procedure. If you experience these problems (or if you are reading this
- prior to installation), you should remove it temporarily from your
- StartUp folder.
- =========================
- Programs registered with System Agent are not automatically unregistered
- from System Agent when Norton Utilities are uninstalled.
- =========================
- If you receive the message "Setup has detected an incomplete
- installation," run the file ~SYMSHEL.EXE from the windows directory to
- clean up the left over files. This problem may occur when something
- interferes with the Windows RunOnce handling.
- =========================
- We generally recommend uninstalling Norton Utilities for Windows 95 1.0
- prior to installing Norton Utilities for Windows 95 2.0. However, if
- you have files protected under Norton protection under the first version
- and you wish to preserve these protected files after updating to Norton
- Utilities for Windows 95 2.0, you should install directly over the
- earlier version.
- =========================
- Note for users installing over Norton Utilities 95 1.0: After
- installation, if you receive the message "A required .DLL file,
- S32UTIL8.DLL, was not found", or the message "The modules listed below
- are out of date for this application", then you will need to delete some
- files from the directory where you installed Norton Utilities 95 2.0.
- Go to the directory where you just installed Version 2.0 and delete all
- files dated earlier than 9/24/96.
- =========================
- To force Internet Explorer 3.0 to install, remove the file SHDOCVW.DLL
- from Windows' system directory.
- =========================
- We have received a few reports of newer modems having problems
- performing the online registration which occurs during install. This
- same issue can also arise when running LiveUpdate from within Norton
- Utilities. This occurs mostly on newer USRobotics modems and
- international modems. The problem can sometimes be solved by restoring
- the original factory settings to your modem (sending an AT&F1 command to
- your modem may sometimes accomplish this). If you still experience this
- difficulty, contact Symantec tech support.
- =========================
- Note to Upgrade Customers:
- If you're upgrading from a CD version of a qualifying product, disable
- the Autorun feature during the upgrade by holding down the Shift key
- when inserting the qualifying CD.
-
- 2.0 General Points of Interest
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- LiveUpdate and Internet Firewalls
- ---------------------------------
- LiveUpdate is the new automatic update feature. If your Internet
- connection is protected by a firewall, you may need to modify its
- configuration to use LiveUpdate. Use the following data to configure
- your firewall to permit access to the Symantec LiveUpdate FTP site.
-
- Host: update.symantec.com
- Outbound data port: 21
- Inbound data port: 20
- Protocol: FTP
-
- Consult your firewall's documentation for implementation details.
- =========================
- Several Norton Utilities programs lock the drive on which they are
- working. If the drive is written to while it is locked, the program must
- restart. As odd as this sounds, this process is normal for multitasking
- operating systems. This process is commonly noticed on a drive
- containing the swap file. For example, if the swap file grows in size
- while Norton Disk Doctor is diagnosing the disk, Norton Disk Doctor
- restarts in order to verify the newly written data on the disk.
- =========================
- Some programs, such as the IBM RRTask List program, prevent Norton
- Utilities programs from obtaining a drive lock. Under these
- circumstances, remove this program from memory by removing it from the
- StartUp folder and/or from the LOAD= line of your WIN.INI file, restart
- your computer, and try the Norton Utilities program again.
- =========================
- The DOS-based programs that accompany Norton Utilities for Windows 95
- have the following minimum memory requirements:
- DOS-based Program Conventional Extended
- Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) 512K NONE
- Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) 360K 2 MB
- Disk Editor (DISKEDIT) 360K 2 MB
- UnErase (UNERASE) 360K 2 MB
- UnFormat (UNFORMAT) 360K 2 MB
- Rescue Restore (RESCUE) 512K NONE
-
- Most of these programs run in protected mode; therefore, a memory
- manager, such as HIMEM.SYS, must be loaded.
- =========================
- The protected mode DOS Norton Utilities programs may display "Run-time
- error R6009 - not enough space for environment" if your PATH environment
- variable contains more than 128 characters.
- =========================
- If you are running Norton Desktop for Windows, the following lines must
- be removed from SYSTEM.INI file:
- device=c:\ndw\vfintd.386
- device=c:\ndw\vnss.386
- =========================
- Norton Disk Doctor can be used to diagnose and recover drives under
- Windows 95 while in safe mode. However, many of the operating system
- functions needed by the other utilities are not available in this mode,
- and therefore the other utilities are not supported under safe mode. If
- you have an emergency situation and you cannot start Windows 95
- normally, we highly recommend that you refer to Chapter 6, "DOS Recovery
- Procedures," in the Norton Utilities User's Guide.
- =========================
- Beware of disk repair programs that are not specifically designed to
- repair the Windows 95 file system. Using such a program can cause
- corruption of long file names. If you accidentally run a disk repair
- program not designed for Windows 95, don't worry. Norton Disk Doctor
- reports and repairs problems with long file names.
- =========================
- Hard disk drives with more than 1024 cylinders may cause problems with
- Norton Utilities if improperly partitioned. You can overcome this
- problem by using an Enhanced IDE (EIDE) or SCSI controller, upgrading
- your system BIOS, or through the use of third-party disk partitioning
- software.
- =========================
- The Windows 95 Setup Wizard does not automatically include Quick View as
- part of the installation process. Quick View must be installed in order
- to use the Quick View feature in UnErase Wizard and Space Wizard. If
- Quick View is not installed on your computer, you can add it by doing
- the following:
- 1 Click Settings, then Control Panel from the Start menu.
- 2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- 3 Click the Windows Setup tab.
- 4 Select Accessories from the list box, then click Details.
- 5 Select Quick View.
- 6 Click OK.
- 7 Click Apply.
- You will be prompted to insert your Windows 95 disk.
- =========================
- Some computers start in monochrome mode after running Windows 95. Any
- DOS program may display in monochrome because of this. To correct this
- problem, try typing MODE CO80 at the prompt.
- =========================
- Certain security features on Internet Explorer may prevent the proper
- operation of Norton System Genie and Overview when running in safe-mode.
- =========================
- Internet Explorer is required to run Norton System Genie and Norton
- Utilities Overview. To install Internet Explorer 3.0 after Norton
- Utilities has been installed, double-click MSIE30.EXE in the Nu95 folder
- on the Norton Utilities CD. IE3.0 requires 23MB of disk space.
- =========================
- Shortcuts copied from Norton System Genie or Norton Utilities Overview
- will not work unless IE3.0 is your default browser.
- =========================
- When installing a Norton Utilities application for use with System
- Agent, select the version ending with the letter S if it is available.
- =========================
- Close Norton Protection and Norton System Doctor before installing
- CommSuite95. CommSuite95 will also prompt you for this, but only after
- you have gone a long way through its installation.
- =========================
- If you have either the Buslogic BT-757s SCSI adapter for EISA systems or
- the Buslogic BT-445s SCSI adapter add the following two lines to the
- SYSTEM.INI file in the Windows directory.
-
- [SYMEVENT]
- DOSINT13HOOK=FALSE
-
- 3.0 Norton Protected Recycle Bin and Norton Protection (NProtect)
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- To configure Norton Protection (NProtect) features, right-click the
- Recycle Bin icon, then click Properties on the context menu.
- =========================
- NProtect uses available free space to protect your files. Once the free
- space available reaches a specified threshold, NProtect starts purging
- the oldest protected files to free up just enough space to protect the
- latest deletion. This threshold is currently set to 10% or 10 MB of the
- current disk partition, whichever is less.
- =========================
- The Norton Protected Recycle Bin protects up to a maximum of 1500 files.
- =========================
- NProtect does not automatically make room on a removable drive if that
- drive was empty at startup. NProtect needs to acquire size measurements
- regarding the drive in order to make room and re-acquires this
- information once a deletion has taken place or once it detects that the
- volume in that drive has changed.
- =========================
- Before compressing a drive, to speed up compression you should empty the
- files that have been protected by Norton Protection. To empty the Norton
- Protected Recycle Bin, right-click the Norton Protected Recycle Bin,
- then click Empty Norton Protected Files.
- =========================
- You may not be able to purge protected files while a disk utility
- program is processing. You will notice that the NProtect shield does not
- change after purging the files (if the Show Norton Protection status
- icon is checked). Close the disk utility and retry the purge command
- again.
- =========================
- If Show Norton Protection status is checked and you check or uncheck the
- Use Large Icons check box on the Plus! tab in the Display Properties,
- then the Recycle Bin icon may appear stretched or shrunken. To fix this,
- go to the Desktop Item tab in the Recycle Bin Properties, uncheck the
- Show Norton Protection status check box, click the Apply button, and
- then check the Show Norton Protection Status check box and click OK.
- =========================
- The Show Norton Protection Status feature may automatically shut-off if
- Windows runs out of memory. Once you resolve your memory problems, you
- turn this feature back on manually.
- =========================
- To uninstall Norton Protection, use the Selective UnInstall option and
- choose UnErase Wizard. This removes both the Norton Protected Recycle
- Bin and UnErase Wizard from your computer. Open Add/Remove Programs from
- the Control Panel to start Setup Wizard's Uninstall programs.
- =========================
- Because NDOS was written before the existence of FAT32, volume free-
- space reports on FAT32 drives may be incorrect.
- =========================
- When file larger than the Max Size Constant is deleted, by design
- NProtect does not protect this file. It is also not added to the tracker
- list, so it does not appear under recently deleted files either. The
- file must be manually recovered.
- =========================
- When using NDOS, some file deletions of read-only files may not be
- protected. Use 4DOS for Windows 95 instead.
- =========================
- Norton Protection will not automatically protect removable drives. Some
- drives can be configured as either removable or fixed (such as Zip
- drives.) You should be aware that Norton Protection checks the state of
- each drive at startup and will not protect this type of drive if it is
- configured as Removable. The Norton Protection tab of the Recycle Bin
- property page will still show this drive as enabled. If you press Apply,
- this behavior will be overridden and the drive will be protected.
- =========================
- Norton Protection stores deleted files in a hidden folder named
- NProtect.
- =========================
- Drives protected by Norton Protection cannot be formatted while Norton
- Protection is enabled. Disable Norton Protection before formatting the
- drive.
- =========================
- When using an Adaptec 2742 SCSI controller Norton Protection may treat
- the floppy drive as a hard disk. Solution: Use the 16-bit floppy drive
- driver.
- =========================
- Restoring a registry snapshot from Norton Registry Tracker may cause the
- Norton Protection status shield to be incorrect. To resynchronize the
- shield state disable showing the Norton Protection state and then re-
- enable it.
-
- 4.0 Norton Diagnostics (NDIAGS) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton Diagnostics will reboot your computer when performing a
- Comprehensive Memory Test. The drivers for compressed drives are
- temporarily disabled during this process. Be sure to start your computer
- normally after using Norton Diagnostics so that the drivers for
- compressed drives are loaded and the drives are properly mounted.
- =========================
- Do not run the Comprehensive Memory Test option from Norton Diagnostics
- on a "swapped" compressed drive (where C: is compressed and another
- drive is the host drive). If you accidentally run Norton Diagnostics in
- this configuration, you must rename your compressed-drive drivers back
- to their original names before restarting your computer. To do this,
- look for the files DBLSPACE.NDS or DRVSPACE.NDS in your root directory,
- and rename them back to DBLSPACE.BIN or DRVSPACE.BIN, respectively, then
- reboot.
-
- 5.0 Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) Windows-based and DOS-based
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The windows version of Norton Disk Doctor is designed to restart upon
- detection of writes to the disk that is being diagnosed. This is needed
- to ensure the data integrity on the disk when repairs are required. This
- restart may occur several times during a single NDD session.
- =========================
- When running the DOS version of NDD on a computer containing one or more
- drives with invalid boot records, you may receive a message saying
- "Invalid media type reading drive x: (Abort, Retry, Fail?)." Select
- Fail, and NDD will continue loading. Select the drive to repair the
- problem.
- =========================
- Norton Utilities programs should not be run during system startup with
- other programs that require exclusive access to a drive. For example, do
- not run Norton Disk Doctor and ScanDisk on the same drive at startup.
- Doing so will produce an error message.
- =========================
- Using Norton Disk Doctor on either SyQuest 270 drives or SCSI drives on
- Adaptec 2940w controllers may warn you of the inability to access
- partitions on drive 1. If you get a message indicating this, go into the
- Windows 95 hardware manager and uncheck INT 13 Unit operation for the
- device if it is enabled.
- =========================
- Make sure you are running under Windows 95 MS-DOS mode when using the
- DOS-based Norton Disk Doctor program to repair the boot record.
- =========================
- NDD can not repair damaged program code in the boot record. Use Rescue
- to restore this data.
- =========================
- NDD currently does not support partitions created with Partition Magic.
- =========================
- On FAT32 drives, depending on the configuration of the drive and the
- amount of memory in your system, the DOS-based applications may produce
- out of memory errors.
- =========================
- After correctly reporting a drive lock error, when the windows-based
- version of NDD exits SAGE will report the Last Result as "Code: 6." This
- means there was a drive lock failure.
- =========================
- Installing new versions of Win95 after Norton Utilities will stop NDD
- from being run as the default startup scanner. Reinstall Norton
- Utilities to fix this.
- =========================
- When restarting Windows after it was not shut down properly, you may
- receive the following message: "Error reading configuration file
- SYMCFG.BIN." Press OK to allow Norton Disk Doctor to check and repair
- any disk errors that may have occurred when the system was shut down.
- Once Windows loads, use the FIND option from the START MENU to locate
- SYMCFG.BIN on your hard drive. If you have more than one hard drive,
- specify each in the FIND program's LOCATE IN box by typing, for example,
- C:\
- for a single drive or
- C:\;D:\
- for multiple drives. When the file is located, right-click the file and
- choose delete. When prompted for confirmation, answer YES.
-
- 6.0 Norton System Doctor
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton System Doctor may report 100% CPU usage when Microsoft's System
- Monitor (SYSMON) program is running. This is caused by System Monitor's
- use of all idle processor time while displaying its processor usage
- gauge.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor may report 100% CPU usage during a pcANYWHERE
- session. This is caused by the high activity generated by constant video
- updates and modem transmissions.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor sensors, may, on occasion, appear on Microsoft
- Access's background window. When this occurs, force the Access window to
- be refreshed by changing the size of the Access window, or by minimizing
- and then maximizing it.
- =========================
- Using High Contrast (White on Black) Accessibility Options may cause
- Norton System Doctor's text to be invisible. You will either need to
- adjust System Doctor's sensor colors, or turn off the High Contrast
- features.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor's sensors have been configured for optimum
- performance on most systems. You should not increase the frequency of
- any sensor that can automatically run a Norton Utilities program, such
- as the Rescue Readiness, Image, Disk Integrity, and Fragmentation
- sensors. If you do notice a decrease in drive performance while Norton
- System Doctor is monitoring that drive, you may want to decrease the
- frequency with which Norton System Doctor monitors that drive.
- =========================
- If you don't use a mouse and you need to access Norton System Doctor
- while it is docked, reopen Norton System Doctor from the Start menu. To
- do this, press CTRL-ESC and use the arrow keys to highlight Norton
- System Doctor from the Norton Utilities menu and press Enter. This does
- not open another instance of Norton System Doctor; it makes Norton
- System Doctor the active window. You can then use ALT-Spacebar or F10 to
- access Norton System Doctor's menu.
- =========================
- Norton System Doctor's docking features are limited while using Program
- Manager (PROGMAN) as the shell, and may produce different results than
- when using the standard Windows 95 shell (EXPLORER) and other docking
- programs. There are several specific issues:
- - The autohide feature may not function correctly.
- - Maximize, restore, and close buttons may be grayed.
- - If a minimized System Doctor is restored by using the Alt-Tab
- key, the border may display inconsistently.
- - Clicking on the minimized title and opening to a full screen may
- exhibit behavior different from that of other applications.
- =========================
- You must open the properties for the given Stop Light sensor in order to
- change its color. You cannot change the color from the Appearance tab of
- the Norton System Doctor Options dialog box.
- =========================
- If you have Always on Top disabled in a docked Norton System Doctor, you
- will not be able to move windows past the area occupied by the System
- Doctor.
- =========================
- In rare cases, in a vertically docked Norton System Doctor, its width
- may be larger than necessary to accommodate the current set of selected
- sensors. To get around this problem, close and re-run the program.
- =========================
- Configuration files saved with version 1 used the default suffix of
- .REG. Although version 2 now uses the default extension of .NSD, these
- files can still be used.
- =========================
- If you believe you have a SMART (Self-Monitoring And Reporting
- Technology) hard drive, but the SMART sensor in Norton System Doctor
- reports that no SMART drives can be found on your system, you may want
- to try installing the Microsoft SMART driver that we've provided for
- your convenience in the SMARTDRV folder on this CD. For more
- information, see the SMARTDRV.TXT file in the SMARTDRV folder on the
- Norton Utilities CD.
- =========================
- If you connect to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) such as CompuServe
- 3.01 or America Online using dial-up networking, you should not enable
- the Internet sensors in Norton System Doctor. ISPs that use dial-up
- networking do not disconnect properly if they detect another application
- using the internet connection. This could cause your ISP charges or your
- telephone bill to be higher than expected.
- 7.0 Rescue Disk
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- You cannot save rescue items to the root of any hard disk. The root
- typically contains important data that could be overwritten.
- =========================
- It is highly recommended that you not save rescue items to a compressed
- floppy disks. When rescue items are stored on a compressed floppy, the
- floppy cannot be used as a boot disk.
- =========================
- The Rescue disk cannot be booted on a dual-boot system with a Windows NT
- boot partition.
- ==========================
- Rescue creates two files called SYSTEM.REG and USER.REG, which contain
- registry information from two different registry files (SYSTEM.DAT and
- USER.DAT, respectively). See Chapter 6, "DOS Recovery Procedures," in
- the Norton Utilities User's Guide for information on restoring the
- registry with these files.
- =========================
- Disk Manager partitions are not compatible with Rescue.
- =========================
- This version of Rescue does not support data stored by previous
- versions.
- =========================
- Under unusual circumstances, windows may report a drive error when
- returning from an MS-DOS session. Running Rescue at this point may not
- report any errors. This is normal behavior since Windows will have
- already corrected the problem by the time Rescue has been run.
- =========================
- The CMOS checkbox in the DOS Rescue application may sometimes falsely
- indicate that the CMOS should be restored. This is because different
- motherboards change the CMOS values at unpredictable times.
- =========================
- The DOS version of Rescue almost always correctly detects a corrupt boot
- record, but on rare occasions it may fail to do so. If this happens and
- you are certain your boot record is corrupt, you can restore it (even if
- Rescue does not detect corruption) by running Rescue and checking the
- Boot Record field.
-
- 8.0 Image
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Image may report "Volume Lock Failed." This indicates that another disk
- program is currently accessing the disk and Image could not lock the
- volume for its own process. Click OK and try again when disk access by
- the other program has stopped.
- =========================
- Programs that rearrange data on the disk, such as Defrag, can invalidate
- the saved image information. Rerun Image after running these types of
- programs.
- =========================
- Image exit codes reported by System Agent are:
- 0=Completed Successfully
- 1=Image cannot image drives on a Lantastic server
- 2=Drive is a network, ASSIGNed, or SUBSTed drive
- 3=Drive is not valid
- 4=The disk is write-protected
- 5=Error writing to disk
- 6=Insufficient memory
- 7=IDX or DAT file in use by another application
- 8=Another Norton Utilities program is using this drive
- 9=Unknown error
-
- 9.0 Speed Disk
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Norton Speed Disk is designed to restart upon detection of writes to the
- disk that is being optimized. This is needed to ensure the data
- integrity on the disk while optimization is occurring. This restart may
- occur several times during a single Speed Disk session.
- =========================
- If Speed Disk needs to "Pack" your DoubleSpace or DriveSpace 2 volume,
- it can take several hours or longer. Using Space Wizard to free up space
- can help overcome this problem.
- =========================
- Speed Disk locks the compressed volume file (CVF) while optimizing.
- Whenever a CVF is locked, the operating system also locks the host drive
- (and any other CVF's on the same host drive). This may result in other
- disk programs failing to run on the host drive while the lock is in
- effect.
- =========================
- If you schedule a Speed Disk session from SAGE, specify the drive to be
- optimized in the command line in the SAGE dialog box, not in the Speed
- Disk options dialog box. (By default, this is the C: drive).
- =========================
- Speed Disk does not support 512-byte clusters on FAT32 partitions. This
- should not be a problem for most users because this is not a standard
- drive configuration.
- =========================
- If Speed Disk is run while another component of Norton Utilities has a
- drive locked, the Start button will remain grayed out. This is because
- no drive is selected in the drive listbox. To get around this, select a
- drive which will cause the button to change to Stop and then select a
- drive again which will re-enable the Start button.
-
- 10.0 System Information
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Total Windows Memory value (located below the pie chart in System
- Information's Memory tab) is calculated by adding together the following
- numbers:
- total physical memory
- + total current swap file size
- + total current free space on disk
- + total size of all currently loaded 32-bit applications
- The last item is included in the total calculation because 32-bit
- applications under Windows 95 are "swapped out" by flushing them from
- memory, and then re-loading from the original disk image when they need
- to be "swapped in."
- =========================
- System Information will report the bus type for "hybrid bus" systems as
- follows:
- VL/ISA is reported as ISA
- VL/EISA is reported as EISA
- PCI/ISA is reported as PCI
- PCI/EISA is reported as PCI
- =========================
- It may take System Information an extended amount of time to gather
- information about network resources on large networks.
- =========================
- Printing a report while using some versions of Adobe Type Manager (ATM)
- may cause the reversed text headings to print incorrectly.
- =========================
- The Multimedia tab cannot gather information about the "cdaudio" MCI
- device while an audio CD is playing. System Information displays "Can
- not gather additional info" when this occurs.
- =========================
- For network, CD, and compressed drives, the Disk Usage Selection on the
- Drive Tab is the total size of all selected items as reported by the
- file system. This does not include "slack" space (wasted space because
- of the device's cluster size), so the total amount allocated will often
- be slightly more than the size displayed by System Information.
- =========================
- If the Windows 95 Device Manager shows an improperly configured device
- (represented by a yellow "!" symbol), System Information may be unable
- to display the correct information for this device. Also note that Plug
- & Play devices that are disconnected may be reported by the Windows 95
- Device Manager as configured. System Information will likely display a
- disconnected Plug & Play device as configured and active.
- =========================
- System Information will identify a NexGen 586 computer as having a 386-
- based processor. The NexGen processor uses a 386 instruction set.
- =========================
- To learn more about benchmarking your computer, click Information from
- the System Benchmark window. Please note the following:
-
- - CMOS settings can be used to enable/disable the L1 and/or L2
- cache. If the CPU seems slower than it should, verify the cache
- settings.
- - Some variation in the benchmark results is normal. System
- Information is designed to exclude common outside factors, such
- as most hardware interrupts, running applications, disk swapping,
- etc. However, some low level system events cannot be completely
- factored out. These events may cause minor variations in benchmark
- results.
- - Although your computer may be the same CPU and MHz speed as other
- computers, it does not mean that it will produce the same
- benchmark results. Various other factors, such as the type and
- speed of the system bus and memory, and the amount and
- architecture of the memory cache, are accounted for and will
- affect the speed of your computer and the results of the
- benchmark.
- =========================
- The multimedia benchmark will only find and test the first CD-ROM drive
- on a system.
- =========================
- The multimedia video and 3D benchmarks require two additional
- components: Indeo AVI Drivers and DirectX. These components are on the
- Norton Utilities CD.
-
- Open the Norton Utilities CD folder by right clicking the appropriate
- drive icon and selecting Open.
-
- To install the Indeo drivers, double-click IVI_95NT.EXE in the Indeo
- folder on the Norton Utilities CD. The Setup Wizard will guide you
- through this simple installation. There is no need to reboot at the end
- of the installation.
-
- To install the DirectX drivers, double-click DXSETUP.EXE in the
- DirectX\DirectX folder on the Norton Utilities CD. The Setup Wizard will
- guide you through this simple installation. You should reboot at the end
- of the installation.
- =========================
- Do not run the multimedia benchmark if you are running in 16 color mode
- as some of the modules such as 3D benchmark require at least 256 colors
- to run. Running these benchmarks in 16 color mode may cause System
- Information to freeze.
- =========================
- The option for physical benchmarking is disabled on CD-ROM drives. To
- obtain similar results, manually set the supplemental cache size to
- small and the access pattern to no read ahead for that drive before
- running the logical benchmark.
- =========================
- When running the drive benchmark while using the Promise DC4030-VL2 EIDE
- disk controller the system may hang. See the troubleshooting section of
- the controller's user manual for possible solutions, such as using only
- one VESA card in the system.
- =========================
- While running Scandisk, you may experience an invalid page fault when
- you click the Details button on the Internet Tab of System Information.
-
- 11.0 UnErase Wizard
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The Recently Deleted Files list shows all files that are recoverable.
- This list will display the last 25 deletions. However, if some of the
- files have been overwritten, you will not see 25 files in the list.
- =========================
- If you delete a file on a floppy disk from an MS-DOS prompt and you
- specify filename letters after a wildcard (for example, DEL *ILENAME.TXT
- as opposed to DEL FILENAME.TXT or DEL *.TXT), then UnErase Wizard will
- show the file as Unrecoverable in its Recently Deleted Files page.
- Right-click in the center of the file list to enable Show Unrecoverable
- Files.) However, the file is usually recoverable if you click Next and
- use the subsequent Wizard pages to search the floppy disk.
- =========================
- If Quick View is not functioning, then refer to the note under "General
- Points of Interest" earlier in this document.
-
- 12.0 UnErase (UNERASE) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- The DOS version of UnErase may run out of memory if you use the Change
- Directory or View All Directories commands on disks with many
- subdirectories, such as network disks. To avoid this problem, use the
- file list to navigate to the directory you want.
- =========================
- When files are deleted using the deltree command from a MS-DOS window in
- Windows 95, then you cannot use the Unerase button in the main
- UnErase/DX dialog box to recover any of these files. When you select
- View All Directories from the File menu and try to recover, you will get
- the error message "Error reading directory. It may be erased." To work
- around this, use Unerase To from the File menu instead.
-
- 13.0 Disk Editor (DISKEDIT) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Under DOS 5, insufficient conventional memory may cause system
- instability. You must have at least 500K of conventional memory for
- stable operation.
- =========================
- When switching to 32-bit boot record view, the current position of the
- cursor will change. To solve this problem, select the range of the
- suspected boot record and then view the selection as a boot record.
- =========================
- Long file names that use high ASCII characters will display as dots in
- the directory view.
- =========================
- If Windows reports that it cannot find HIMEM.SYS after running Disk
- Editor, remove all reference to HIMEM.SYS from the CONFIG.SYS and
- CONFIG.WIN files. These references are redundant since Windows always
- loads HIMEM.SYS. Note: Do not remove references to HIMEM.SYS from any
- CONFIG.DOS file you may have.
-
- 14.0 UnFormat (UNFORMAT) DOS-based program
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Long file names are not recoverable on floppy disks.
- =========================
- UnFormat does not work on compressed disks.
- =========================
- On FAT32 drives, depending on the configuration of the drive and the
- amount of memory in your system, UnFormat may produce a General
- Protection Fault due to lack of memory.
- =========================
- Choosing to partially restore any information will disable the automatic
- unerase feature. Run NDD after restoring to reconstruct lost files.
- =========================
- Due to the dynamics of FAT32 file systems, UnFormat may not always
- detect when the cluster size has been changed.
-
- 15.0 Norton System Genie and Norton Utilities Overview
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- To run Norton System Genie from a DOS box, change to the directory in
- which Norton utilities was installed. Next, enter
- "systuner html\nsg.htm"
- =========================
- Pressing the help key (F1) while in Norton System Genie will cause the
- help for Internet Explorer to be displayed. To see help on Norton System
- Genie, choose Info Desk from the Norton Utilities Start menu, double-
- click Norton Utilities, then double-click Norton System Genie.
- =========================
- When some applications (for example, Disney Toy Story Interactive) exit
- improperly, the graphics may be scrambled. To solve this problem,
- minimize Norton System Genie and then restore it.
- =========================
- When some applications, such as Myst, exit improperly, Norton System
- Genie may be maximized and will not return to its original state. To
- solve this problem, close and restart Norton System Genie.
- =========================
- When using a 9FX Motion 771 video card with small fonts, Norton System
- Genie may not display correctly. Solution: Selecting a custom font that
- is even smaller may improve the appearance.
- =========================
- In order to be able to use System Genie .HTM files, it is recommended
- that Internet Explorer be installed as the default browser.
- =========================
- For best results when viewing Norton System Genie, leave the font size
- in Internet Explorer set to Medium or smaller (in the View\Fonts menu),
- and leave your Windows display set to Small Fonts (Settings\Control
- Panel\Display\Settings\Font Size).
- =========================
- Norton Utilities Overview includes a link to the Symantec World Wide Web
- site (http://www.symantec.com). To get to our site from Norton Utilities
- Overview, click on the GO SYMANTEC text in the upper right corner of the
- page. Clicking GO SYMANTEC will open Internet Explorer 3.0 and display
- the site using your Internet provider. If you've installed another
- browser as your default browser, clicking GO SYMANTEC always opens
- Internet Explorer 3.0. This link will not work if you uninstall Internet
- Explorer 3.0, therefore clicking GO SYMANTEC will do nothing. Re-
- installing Internet Explorer 3.0 fixes this problem. To install Internet
- Explorer 3.0 after Norton Utilities has been installed, double-click
- MSIE30.EXE in the Nu95 folder on the Norton Utilities CD. IE3.0 requires
- 23MB of disk space.
-
- 16.0 Norton File Compare
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Binary files can occasionally be viewed in the text viewer. These files
- will appear illegible.
- =========================
- The maximum size of a file is 32,767 lines. If you receive a "could not
- load all of file" message, try tracking a smaller hive.
-
- 17.0 Norton Registry Tracker
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------
- To track files with long names (greater than 12 characters), track the
- files individually instead of tracking the folder that contains them.
- =========================
- If you track directories, then a hidden or system file under that
- tracked directory will not affect a snapshot. If you want to track a
- hidden or system file, then make it unhidden or non-system.
- =========================
- If a snapshot of a file tracked by Norton Registry Tracker is also being
- edited inside another application, there is a chance that an error
- message will appear saying that the file was in use when you try to save
- or if you have an auto-save feature in the application.
- =========================
- Files created and Deleted in DOS mode in a tracked folder do not cause
- an automatic snapshot. Solution: Manually force a snap shot.
- =========================
- Do not use Registry Tracker to track any text or data files that are
- contained in a folder that is protected by Norton Your Eyes Only. Doing
- so may cause Tracker to take continuously repeated snapshots that
- display no changes. This is completely benign, but may cause extremely
- high CPU usage on your machine.
